- This course is part of an expanded sequence of courses designed by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to provide a substantial and appropriate mathematical education to prospective (or working) elementary-, middle-, and secondary school teachers, and is motivated by recent reports from both the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and the MAA (Mathematical Association of America).
**Description:**Designed for middle-school mathematics teachers. Algebraic reasoning, patterns and inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, arithmetic and algebra of integers, algebraic systems, algebraic modeling in geometry, axiomatic mathematics. (Also appropriate for elementary school teachers.)**Textbook:**"**Algebra Connections**", by Ira Papick, Mathematics Dept. University of Missouri - Columbia, published by Prentice Hall in January 2006. This text is a product of the**Connecting Middle School and College Mathematics**NSF project, 2001-2004, to strengthen and improve the mathematics preparation of middle school mathematics teachers.
