UMKC Chapter Announcements

  • Some units are experiencing issues with academic freedom and shared governannce. If your unit is one of them, we cannot help you if we do not know about it. Write an article for the next issue of the Faculty Advocate. Submit your file to Scott Baker.
  • Hold the date. The Missouri State Conference of AAUP plans to hold its next meeting in Kansas City on February 13, 2010 with February 20 being the backup in case of snow.
  • Almost all leadership posts in our chapter are about to turn over. People are retiring, and we need a new generation of leadership to step up if the chapter is to remain active. Two people are holding multiple jobs in order to keep the chapter going. That is not sustainable. In order to conduct business next year, a slate of officers needs to be in place. The temporary disappearance of the AAUP chapter at UMKC in the early 1990s occurred because outgoing officers could not be replaced. A great deal was accomplished after the chapter was reborn because people were willing to put time and energy into it. Faculty are once again facing difficult times. Shared governance, benefits, and tenure track positions are threatened by forces from outside the campus. The AAUP is needed now more than ever.
