Under The Cover And Over The Top is a joint initiative of the University of Missouri-Kansas City American Studies Program and the Marr Sound Archives, a division of the Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections, Miller Nichols Library. Part pictorial survey, part historical analysis, the exhibit features cheesecake album art of the long-play record during the 1950s and 1960s; and examines how it relates to the broader sexual discourse that defined early Cold War America. The objective is to visually document the prominence of cheesecake album art during this time, to promote further discussion on the topic and, finally, to link American cultural studies with campus library resources.
The content herein does not represent the view of any academic or library unit, or the University of Missouri-Kansas City as a whole.
Exhibit originally written and conceived in 2004 by Kelly McEniry.
Thank you to the Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections and the Marr Sound Archives for making this project possible. Special thanks to Dr. Mary Ann Wynkoop, Director of the American Studies Program, and Robert Ray, Special Collections Librarian, Miller Nichols Library, for their wisdom and support.
