DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Department of Art and Art History offers Undergraduate degrees in art, art history, studio art, and art education, as well as advanced degrees in art history and studio art. Studios and classrooms are located in the Fine Arts Building at 51st and Rockhill Road, as is the UMKC Gallery of Art.

Course offerings in art history range widely, including modern European art and architecture, arts of the ancient world, arts of the African Diaspora, MesoAmerican and Native American Arts, Renaissance and Baroque art, history of photography, and American art.

In addition to drawing, painting, and 3-D design and construction, emphasis areas in studio art include digital imaging and multimedia, photography, printmaking, and graphic design.

There are more than 170 students in the Department of Art and Art History pursuing any of the four undergraduate degree programs, the two M. A. options or the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree. One-third of the department's majors are graduate students. After completing their degrees, undergraduates and graduate students follow careers in the production of fine arts, teaching, or employment in the graphic design industry, museums and private galleries.

The Department of Art and Art History also offers instruction to hundreds of nonmajor students every year in the form of introductory studio and art history courses. Studio faculty also participate in the American culture, classical studies, integrated studies in the humanities and honors programs.
