"Lessons for Little Girls" is based on the popular game "Fortune Teller" or "Cootie Catcher", which is one of the very first interactive games children create on their own. Dreams and fortunes are created and shared as the game is played with friends.
All themes explored in "Lessons for Little Girls" emerge from personal history as I explore dreams and aspirations expressed through play. Dreams are juxtaposed with reality, and the child's world with that of an adult. One of my goals was to create a poetic, emotional, and critical look at the intermingled roles of the woman and the girl. Kati Toivanen
