Why did you choose your major?
I was originally a journalism major at another school but I changed my mind when I fell in love with my microeconomics class. After taking Principles of Macroeconomics, my professor told me if I didn’t change my major I would miss my calling. I transferred to UMKC where the Department of Economics is phenomenal.
I’d like to do financial advising or analyst work—working with numbers, which I love, but also working with people and helping them meet their retirement goals versus hiding in an office all day.
Have your professors made an impact on you?
My professors have encouraged my intellectual growth. Professor Vorst is the one who convinced me to come here. She continually offers a listening ear and encourages me to reach my goals. When I transferred, I wanted to do an internship and she helped me find one. I am ecstatic to be able to learn from some of the best financial advisors in the Kansas City area.
What will you take from your experience at UMKC into your professional career?
UMKC’s Economics faculty encourages analytical and critical thinking and recognizes that these are essential skills in the business world today. My professors care about their students’ learning. They teach their classes instead of having classes run by teaching assistants like many major universities.
