Our program
Black Studies is interested in providing critical skill sets in written and oral communication, research, analysis, theory building, multicultural understanding and global awareness. We are committed to general education and professional development, as well as the development of scholars in the field.
Currently, the Black Studies program at UMKC is going through a period of reorganization and growth. There will be many changes and enhancements to the curriculum.
Minor in Black Studies
Presently UMKC offers a minor in Black Studies, but the minor is under revision and new courses are being developed. If courses that meet the requirements for the existing minor are unavailable, students may consult with the director to identify acceptable substitutions. The program also envisions offering a major in Black Studies in the future. Additionally, courses in Black Studies at both the undergraduate and graduate levels will be identified with the prefix, BLKS. This change is in progress.
Master of Liberal Studies
The Master of Liberal Studies (MALS) program at UMKC identifies Black Studies as one of its four established areas of focus. Consequently, the program will attempt to offer a complement of graduate courses that satisfy this focus.
