CAER Background

The Center for Applied Environmental Research at the University of Missouri-Kansas City was established in 1996.  The center has the expertise and resources to undertake research and education related to the environment, including sampling, analysis and interpretation of soil, sediment, water and biotic test data, design of pollution prevention strategies, solid and hazardous waste management, risk assessment and environmental justice issues.  CAER is geared to offer special seminars or workshops in waste management, pollution prevention and other areas of environmental education to train personnel working in industry and business.  The center collaborates with other environmental organizations to further its objectives.

All faculty affiliated with the CAER have advanced degrees in their fields of specialization, with expertise and experience in assessing and solving environmental problems.  Areas of expertise include environmental geosciences, toxicology, environmental engineering, hydrogeology, environmental chemistry, environmental sociology, environmental economics, environmental psychology, risk communication, risk assessment and grass roots community environmental education.  In addition, the various laboratories located on the UMKC campus are equipped with state-of-the-art analytical and testing equipment to analyze soil, water, minerals and other samples for environmental assessment and research.
