Research interests

My research interests are in the bioorganic chemistry of materials. Our research program focuses on design and synthesis of new enantioselective biocatalysts for organic and materials chemistry.

What do we do?

We immobilize synthetically-useful enzymes in sol-gel glasses and use such enzymes in dynamic kinetic resolution and multienzyme biocatalysis of organic transformations.

Diagram of an organic transformation: part A, conversion of racemic esters into optically active derivatives; part B, selective organic oxidations; part C, silica nanoparticles and enzyme catalysis.

In Project A, two catalysts, lipase and a racemizing agent, are immobilized on solid support and then used to catalyze kinetic and dynamic kinetic resolution of various racemic esters.

In Project B, selective oxidation of organic substrates with molecular oxygen is being catalyzed by immobilized enzymes, amine oxidase (AO) and cyclohexanone monooxygenase (CHMO). CHMO will also be used in multicatalyst systems containing two or three immobilized enzymes.

In Project C, we are developing novel core-shell silica-silica and silica-polymer nanoparticles and explore their use in catalysis and functional materials.
