Specialties: Experimental and documentary filmmaking. Cultural and queer studies. Grassroots organizing and education with media.
Bio: Gee has an M.F.A. in Film Production from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in Communication Studies/Media Arts.
His early short films rising, chemistries and soil have screened and won awards internationally at festivals including Sundance, Rotterdam, Hong Kong and dozens of others. He produced the recent documentaries Flight Call and Art on the Block, and is directing/producing the feature length documentary Our Mall to be completed summer 2007 intended for a PBS broadcast.
Prior to moving to Kansas City Gee worked in New York with P.O.V., the documentary series on PBS, and in San Francisco with the Independent Television Service (ITVS), Film Arts Foundation and the Mill Valley Film Festival. He has worked on two Academy Award-nominated documentary films Regret to Inform and Promises and has developed national outreach campaigns for several others including Scout’s Honor and Our House.
While in Kansas City Gee co-founded time:base, an alternative exhibition series, and bullseye, a documentary series presented in association with the Filmmakers Jubilee.
Gee was named outstanding professor of the year at UMKC in 2006, and has helped develop the new emphasis in Film & Media Arts in the Communication Studies department. At UMKC he has served on the advisory committees for the Center for Creative Studies and Students in the City.
When not at school or making films you will likely find him in the pool, in the garden or at the movies.
