Film & Media Arts

The Film and Media Arts Emphasis promotes intellectual rigor, creative exploration and skill development. Students write, produce, direct and edit several narrative, documentary and experimental shorts while studying histories and theories of the moving image. Students work with digital-video, motion-picture cameras, non-linear editing systems, and television and radio production. Internships and extracurricular activities further prepare students for creative success, professional careers and advanced graduate studies.

 


In addition to the 6 credit hours of the department's core courses, the Film and Media Arts emphasis requires COMS 230 - Introduction to Film Studies (3 cr. hrs) and 24 hours of Film and Media Arts electives for a total of 33 credit hours.

The Media Production track in the Department of Communication Studies offers students opportunities for skill-building and creativity while exploring film history and theory. Students will learn and use: video, digital, Super-8 and 16mm cameras; Final Cut Pro, Pro-tools and AVID editing; a production studio and broadcast control room; and much more. A Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a concentration in Media Production means students begin their professional and post-graduate endeavors with accomplished creative work, technical skills, internship experience and intellectual depth.
