Journalism & Mass Communication

An Emphasis in Journalism & Mass Communication prepares students for careers in the rapidly changing communications fields such as television and radio, print, new media, advertising, public relations and consulting. The Emphasis stresses academic rigor, journalistic inquiry and professional practice. Students can select or combine courses from nationally recognized faculty in print, television or radio broadcasting, advertising and public relations. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the many and varied internships throughout Kansas City, a major media market. Students may also supplement their classroom experience by working for The University News, an independent weekly student newspaper at UMKC. Reporters, editors and senior staff can earn academic credit through a practicum directed by their faculty advisor.

In addition to the department's six credit hours of core courses, there are six required hours: 220 and 303WI. An additional 21 hours of Journalism and Mass Communication electives are required, for a total of 33 hours.
