- Having a hard time making up your mind about a major at UMKC? You're not alone - 77% of
all college Freshmen and Sophomores in America don't know either. Even students who have
chosen a major are likely to change their minds at some time during their college years.
If you are still deciding, UMKC has an exciting new program for you . It is the General
Studies Program for Deciding Students and will take a proactive approach to seeking out
students who want to explore academic and career connections. Academic advisors, career
counselors and student peer professionals will be available to help students select majors
and shape future career goals. This program will:
- Help you come to a decision about a major and career. This will be accomplished through
counseling with professional staff or computer assisted programs that will help you
evaluate skills, interests, values, and personality traits;
- Provide individual academic advising so you are taking classes that will count toward a
degree, regardless of what career you eventually choose.
- Offer small group workshops on decision making and career goals as well as others on
resume writing and interview skill;
- Utilize student peer professionals who are trained to offer advice on courses and jobs;
- Coordinate part-time and full-time internships and employment opportunities which will
demonstrate how your major will prepare you for a particular job;
We believe that this positive outreach program will help you in a number of ways. Not
only will you develop a better understanding about your interests, ambitions, and values,
you will come to understand the requirements and conditions of career success. And you
will know that you are on the right track with courses so you won't lose time and credit.
We are looking forward to working with you in the coming years to make your experience
at UMKC one that you will not just enjoy but one that will also provide you with the
knowledge and skills for a rewarding life beyond college.
