INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Submission and Format

Submit one hard copy of the manuscript and 3-1/2" diskette, or simply email your paper to Dr. Ben Young (YoungB@umkc.edu), Kurt Christensen (klckb4@umkc.edu), Daniel Conceicao (dncd49@umkc.edu), and Udomdej Leesengheng (ul9b7@umkc.edu).

Number all pages, including endnotes and references, consecutively.

All manuscripts must be single-spaced, including block quotations, endnotes, reference list, and table headings.

Word Count: No more than 5,000 words.

Textual Divisions

If a paper is divided into major sections, the introductory section needs no heading; subsequent section headings should be given subtitles. Do not use roman numerals.

Quotations

All quotations should be checked carefully for accuracy and should be unaltered except for ellipses and bracketed insertions. Block quotations should be double-spaced and set off from the text by indention. Author/date citations should be given in brackets.

Notes and References (See Samples: Sample 1, Sample 2)

All notes should be double-spaced at the end of the article. In the text, notes should be numbered consecutively throughout the article and should be indicated by superscript numerals following the punctuation. Reference citations in the text should be enclosed in

brackets as follows [Author 1995, 9]. References listed at the end of the article must include the following information: author, title, name of journal, volume number, month or season of publication, year of publication, year of publication, and inclusive page numbers; and (books): author, title, city of publication, publisher, and year of publication, in the following format:

Doe, John. "Industrial Organization." Journal of Economic Issues 17, no. 4 (December 1983): 498-509.

Doe, John. Property Rights. New York: Macmillan, 1978.

For parenthetical references within the text, use the following format:

… as found in recent studies [Jones and Smith 1990; Thomas 1989, 44; Irwin 1988, 25-30].

For a critique of recent industrial policy proposals, see Marshall [1983, 281-98].

Please check your author/date citations in the text against the citations listed in the reference list to ensure that the spelling of names and years listed correspond correctly. Also, please do not use op cit or ibid.

In general, for this journal's style, see the University of Chicago Manual of Style, which indicates forms for both endnotes and references. Please bear in mind that if incomplete information is supplied initially, the editorial process is expedited.

Style

Our spelling authority is Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary. It is assumed, of course, that all manuscripts will be proofread for typographical errors and spelling consistency prior to submission. The Journal follows the rules of capitalization, punctuation, and many points of grammar found in Manual of Style. Abbreviations such as i.e., e.g., cf., and etc. should not be overused. A first name or two initials must be supplied when each individual is first mentioned in the text or notes. The full name of any organization or government agency should be spelled out first if subsequent reference is to be by acronym. The word percent should be spelled out in text material and accompanied by Arabic numerals.

Mathematical and Tabular Material

A sheet clearly identifying all mathematical symbols used should accompany the paper. All tables, graphs, figures, and illustrations should be numbered and amply spaced on separate sheets of paper. The author should indicate in a marginal note the general area in the text where such material is to be incorporated. Mathematical equations should be typed on separate lines and numbered consecutively at the right margin, with Arabic numerals in parenthesis. Use Greek letters only when necessary. Note that ambiguities may arise between capital and lowercase letters; zero and o (0).
