The Department's degree programs include a B.A. in Economics, a M.A. in Economics, and a Interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree. All degree programs are offered in both day and evening formats. The Department also participates in the PACE program of adult education, offering emphasis area degrees in human resource and commercial economics.

The UMKC Department of Economics faculty have a wide range of interests, including macroeconomics, microeconomics, public finance, economic development, labor economics, quantitative economics (statistics and econometrics), forensic economics, comparative systems, money and banking, and others. The department prides itself on presenting a wide range of philosophical thought, such as institutional (evolutionary) and post-Keynesian economics. The faculty has published in international, national, and regional journals of note. They regularly present formal papers at regional, national, and international conferences.

Financial Aid

Graduate assistantships and doctoral fellowships are available through the Department of Economics. These include Kemper Doctoral Fellowships, Minority Doctoral Fellowships, and Minority Master’s Fellowships. Other types of financial aid are available through the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, or the International Student Affairs Office. Various types of financial aid are listed in the University’s General Catalog.
