Course Description: The student examines the application of economic theory under alternative
market structures and management objectives and its relationship to corporations and the firm. The
course focuses on the concepts of average, total, and marginal revenue; costs and utility; elasticities;
returns to scale; static equilibria under competition, monopolistic competition, oligopoly, and
monopoly; and profit maximization and loss minimization strategies.
Course Statement of Objectives:
a. Students will understand why business and individuals act as they do in a market economy.
b. Students will apply microeconomics to practical problems.
c. Students will be able to communicate microeconomic principles to others in an
understandable manner.
