My previous research and publications have dealt with a number of interrelated literary and cultural concerns: Asian America, Ethnic Studies, turntablism/hip-hop, music, political/legal theory, international adoption, video games, and blackface/yellowface minstrelsy. To get a sense of how I discuss these topics, see any of the following:
“Flexible Production: International Adoption, Race, Whiteness,” Jouvert: A Journal of Postcolonial Studies 6.1-2 (2001). http://social.chass.ncsu.edu/jouvert/v6i1-2/shiu.htm
“On Loss: Anticipating a Future for Asian American Studies,” MELUS 31.1 (2006): 3-33.
“Styl(us): Asian North America, Turntablism, and Relation,” CR: The New Centennial_Review 7.1 (2007): 81-106.
I’m currently working on a book project, Plenary Desires: State Power and Asian American Literature, which looks at how Asian American writers have examined, challenged, and reshaped debates concerning citizenship, sovereignty, and being. My next research project will deal with how popular literature—especially science fiction—by minority writers proposes and imagines alternative futures and new foundations for an America “to come.”
