Department of English

UMKC Composition Program

UMKC’s Composition Program is committed to helping students develop a repertoire of writing abilities that will help them succeed at the university and beyond.  To achieve this goal, students will complete nine credit hours of composition, beginning with English 110:  Introduction to Academic Prose  and English 225:  Intermediate Academic Prose.  Upon successful completion of English 225, students must take the Written English Proficiency Test (WEPT)  to demonstrate their ability to write a critical essay according to the conventions of academic writing.  Students who have passed the WEPT can choose from a variety of Writing Intensive (WI) courses to complete their final three credit hours of composition:

English 301WI:  Writing in the Academy

            English 304WI:  Writing & Technology

English 305WI:  Theories and Practices of Composition

            English 342WI:  Women & Rhetoric

English 403WI:  Writing in Cultural Contexts

In addition, many departments on campus offer WI courses designed to help students understand and master the specific conventions of writing within various disciplines.  Consult the undergraduate catalog for a complete list of WI courses or the schedule of classes for current offerings.

Students who have difficulty passing the WEPT can enroll in the three-credit hour course, English 299Form & Structure of Writing for additional assistance with their writing.  Student who earn a C or better in English 299 can then enroll in any WI course.

All UMKC writing teachers place students’ writing at the center of their courses.  Student can expect to engage fully in composing processes:  prewriting, drafting, revising, giving and receiving feedback, and editing.    Through such activities, students can learn to writing their readings of the world.
