What is the WEPT?

The WEPT is the Written English Proficiency Test, a three-hour exam offered twice each semester. Packets for the exam are available seven days before the given test date. The packets include detailed instructions for preparing for the test and several articles on a particular topic. Past WEPT topics have included racism on campus, academic honesty, and gays in the military. You'll be expected to write an essay on the topic, integrating information from the articles and including parenthetical citation and a Works Cited page.

Who has to take it?

The WEPT is a requirement for all degree-seeking undergraduates at UMKC, including those earning second bachelor's degrees at UMKC.

When should I take it?

You should take the WEPT after you've completed English 225 and after you've accumulated 45 credit hours. You must pass the WEPT before you begin any Writing Intensive (WI) class.

How do I register for the WEPT?

To “enroll” to take the exam, go to http://blackboard.umkc.edu and login with your UMKC user name and password in the “UMKC Portal” area. Click  Login. On the Welcome page, go to the “Organization Catalog” section and click Browse Organization Catalog. For the name of the Organization, type WEPT Registration & Results (be sure to use the ampersand (&) or the WEPT session will not appear) and hit <GO>. Then, a list of the dates with this “Organization” title will appear. Click the <Enroll> button to the right of the one you want to take and on the following page, click <Submit.> When you go to the organization appearing on your personal Blackboard site, it will be called WEPT Registration & Results with the date. After you click on it, you will enter a portal entitled "To the Students." From there, click on the Announcements button to the left. It will instruct you how to find the Student Information sheet, which you must print, complete, and bring to the exam.

If you encounter problems or have questions, please contact the UMKC Call Center, (816) 235-2000.

When and where should the WEPT Packet be picked-up?

A week before the exam, you must purchase a packet of readings for the WEPT at the copy center (on the main floor in Royall Hall--across from Stack Auditorium and Einstein's deli/bistro). The photocopy fee is minimal--less than $5. You must STUDY this packet and bring it to the exam. Note that it contains information about the WEPT on the first page and about MLA documentation on the second and third pages. NOTE—this readings packet will run more than 20 pages and you need time to study it. Thus, the packet will not be available on the day of the test.

What do I need to bring to the exam?

When you study the packet before the exam, you may highlight sections—but you may make only VERY BRIEF notes. Again, you'll bring that packet with you to take the test. Be sure to bring your student ID, your UMKC user name, and student ID number, and the Student Information sheet, too. You must fill out that Student Information sheet to register: I posted it in the Course Materials section for each WEPT “organization.” Again, bring the student information sheet with you when you enter the exam.  Please note, for your convenience, we will accept another valid ID with a photo on it, but the university will not be liable for it should it become misplaced. Thus, we highly recommend that you bring your student ID.
Remember, you won't be completely registered until you turn in the data sheet with your completed exam.  (If you change your mind about sitting for the exam this time, you do not need to contact us. Your registration will not be “complete,” and thus, your enrollment in the Blackboard class will not count as one of your attempts to take the WEPT.)

When is the WEPT offered?

The next WEPT will be on February 25, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Stack Auditorium (Room 111), Royall Hall.  We will also hold the WEPT on April 15, 2009, June 17, 2009, September 23, 2009, and November 4, 2009.

Can I get help for the WEPT?

We offer free tutors for the WEPT, too. For help preparing for the exam, please contact the Writing Center, 5201 Rockhill Road (phone 235-1146).  The Writing Center will hold WEPT Workshops until the day before the exam. Please feel free to e-mail bowenlm@umkc.edu if you have further questions.

How can I find out whether I passed or failed the WEPT?

Your results will be posted on Blackboard no more than four weeks after the test date. If you haven't been notified via Blackboard it's more than likely that the WEPT coordinator, Lindsey Martin-Bowen did not receive tyour correct user name.

What if I fail the WEPT?

The English Department sends copies of failing exams to the Writing Lab. You may call for an appointment (235.1146), and a Writing Lab tutor will go over the exam with you to help determine why you failed. Please phone the center immediately. The tutors will not review failed WEPTs the week immediately before or after a WEPT exam. Further, the tutors review failed WEPTs only by appointments, which must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.

You can also enroll in Englis 299 for WEPT tutoring. English 299 does not count toward your degree. You may only take the WEPT twice. Students who fail the WEPT twice must take English 299 to receive their degrees.

Who can I contact for help or more information?

The Writing Center, 5201 Rockhill Road (235-1146) offers tutoring workshops for the exam.  The English Department has also set up a link to WEPT Information sheets from its website.

If students need more information, they may feel free to email  Lindsey Martin-Bowen, Coordinator of Writing Assessment, at bowenlm@umkc.edu.
