The Greater Kansas City Writing Project
The Greater Kansas City Writing Project (GKCWP), working through the University of Missouri - Kansas City, provides comprehensive professional development programs and on-campus courses in the teaching of writing from kindergarten through college. GKCWP workshops and courses and programming connect theory with practice by incorporating writing into various academic curriculums for the enhancement of student learning and communication.
Since its establishment in 1983, GKCWP has worked with thousands of teachers representing more than 30 school districts in Kansas and Missouri. GKCWP is affiliated with the National Writing Project (NWP) and is designed on the teachers-teaching-teachers model of the Bay Area Writing Project (founded in 1973).
Program Aims:

improve student writing abilities by improving the teaching and learning of writing in schools and universities;

develop collaborative university and school professional development programs for classroom teachers;

expand the professional roles of classroom teachers.
The mission of the Greater Kansas City Writing Project as a site of the National Writing Project is to improve the teaching of writing and improve learning in the nation's schools. Following the NWPís professional development model, the GKCWP recognizes the primary importance of teacher knowledge, expertise, and leadership.
The GKCWP believes that access to high quality educational experiences is a basic right of all learners and a cornerstone of equity. Through its extensive network of teachers, the GKCWP seeks to promote exemplary instruction of writing in every classroom in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
The GKCWP values diversity - our own as well as that of our students, their families and their communities. We recognize that our lives and practices are enriched when those with whom we interact represent diversities of race, gender, class, ethnicity, and language.
