The Language Resource Center (LRC) is a language lab available to all UMKC students.  We provide a state of the art study center which students may use to complete the web-based and interactive audio-visual requirements for their foreign language courses.  The LRC's student resources include: free tutors in French, German and Spanish for students currently taking classes in the Department of Foreign Languages, a computer lab equipped with Mac computers, audio and video resources available for use in the lab, a viewing room/ meeting room, and a comfortable student lounge area.

At the LRC, there is always staff on hand to help students with any of the hardware, software or audio/video equipment provided. Students may check out audio and video resources for use in the lab with the help of one of our lab assistants.

The Computer Lab

The LRC computer lab provides students with 30 Mac desktop computers with built-in DVD/CD ROM drives, Bluetooth and webcams.  Available on all of the computers is Microsoft Office for Mac, which allows students to use the LRC  in conjunction with other UMKC computer labs to work on  digital documents on Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Students will also find work stations available for use with their personal laptop computers.  All computer lab equipment is available to aid students with completion of the web-based and interactive content in their foreign language courses.  The computer lab is available to students  for individual study.  It is also available to classes, by reservation only.  Occasionally, when a class meets in the lab, the computer space may be limited.

Tutors

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures provides free French, German and Spanish tutoring to students currently enrolled in language courses at UMKC.  The tutors are available to help French, German and Spanish students of any level.  The tutors can assist students with grammar questions, composition corrections, conversation practice, and with finding external resources to aid in language study.  For more information on current tutors and the times and days they are available, call the lab at 816-235-2824.

The Viewing Room

The viewing room in the LRC functions as both a space to view video materials and as a meeting or study space for students, groups and classes. It is equipped with a multi-zone DVD player and a multi-norm VHS, both can be used with DVDs and VHS tapes from around the world. The viewing room seats a maximum of 15 and is available to students, faculty and staff of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, by reservation only.  To schedule a time to use the viewing room, call 816-235-2824.

The Lounge

The LRC's student lounge is available to students anytime during regular lab hours.  We encourage students to come in and relax as they study.  In the mornings, students will find fresh coffee and hot water for tea available for their convenience.  The lounge functions as both an individual study space and a space for study groups.  No reservation is required.
