The University
of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is located in the
center of a bi-state metropolitan area that has a total population of 1.8
million. Metropolitan Kansas City offers a full range of cultural and
recreational activities including spacious parks, the Kansas City Zoo, the
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and other art galleries, the Kansas City
Repertory Theater, and the Kansas City Symphony, as well as the Kansas City
Royals baseball team and the Kansas City Chiefs professional football team,
and frequent amateur running events.
The UMKC Department of Geosciences is located in the midst of
attractively wooded grounds six miles south of the central business district
of Kansas City. The Department of Geosciences offices and labs are located
in Flarsheim Hall, a 184,000 sq ft structure completed in 2000 to house the
physical sciences, engineering, and computer sciences. Conveniently located
just one block from UMKC Geosciences are the rich resources of the
privately-endowed Linda Hall Library of Engineering, Science and Technology.
The Country Club Plaza shopping and entertainment district — one of Kansas
