Current Students
Honors Colloquium - Spring 2012 Colloquium featured UMKC professors from a variety of departments and schools. The semester's theme was "Inspired and Inspiring: Showcasing Our UMKC Professors." The theme for Fall 2012 is politics!
Honors Living/Learning Community - The Honors Program, in collaboration with the office of Residential Life, hosts a Living/Learning Community in Oak Street Residence Hall. This community of honors students has the opportunity to live and learn together through cohort classes and special programs and events. Educational and social activities are planned throughout the semester, and these activities are open to all students in the Honors Program. For more information, please contact Residential Life or Dr. Gayle Levy, Honors Program Director.
Honors Discussion/Study Groups
Discussion groups and language tables for Fall 2012 will be announced in August 2012. Students may earn honors credits by participating regularly in a study group. The groups meet once a week.
-
Evaluation Form for Discussion Sections - This form should be filled out by the students who attended a discussion group. It helps to strengthen the discussion sections and lets the director know what the participants think of the group.
Honors Contracts
-
Contract: The honors contract is a great way to get honors credit for a class. Take the first week of class to determine if you want to receive honors credit and to develop an idea for an honors project. Then approach the teacher with your ideas and this contract along with a copy of the "Letter to Instructors" (below). If the teacher needs more information about the program, please refer the professor to the Honors Program Director. Contracts are due to the Honors Director within the first four weeks of the semester.
Note: Activity/PE courses are ineligible for honors credit.
New for Fall 2012 - In addition to the contract, the student must complete an honors add/drop form, dropping the regular section and adding the honors section. The add/drop form is submitted at the same time as the honors contract. Note: The Office of Registration and Records will assign the class number for the new honors section.
Completion Form (PDF or MS Word) - The completion form needs to be filled out and signed by the instructor for any completed contracts and given to the Honors Program Director at the end of the semester so that the Director can approve the course for honors credit. A course grade of B or higher is required for honors credit. Completion forms are due no later than the Tuesday following finals week. Either the student or the instructor may submit the form to the Honors Program office.
If the student requests an extension of the deadline, he/she must email the Honors Program Director with said request before the end of the semester. The Honors Program AA will note this in the student's file and place a hold on the student's transcript. The student will be advised in writing that the completion form must be submitted within four weeks of the end of the semester. If the completion form is not received within the allotted timeframe, the Honors Program AA will complete a Course Change form, switching the student to the regular section of the class. Once the course change has been processed, the Honors Program AA will remove the transcript hold.
If the student fails to complete the contract or receives a grade of B- or lower for the class, the Honors Program AA will complete a Grade Change form, switching the student to the regular section of the class.
Senior Honors Thesis
All honors students are encouraged to undertake the six-hour Senior Honors Thesis. If you have completed the requirements for the Honors Program and the Senior Honors Thesis, you will graduate not only "with Honors" but also as an "Honors Scholar," which will be noted on your transcripts. Please note that the six-hour sequence will be included in the total number of honors credits students need to complete the Honors Program. For more information about the Senior Honors Thesis, please visit the website.
