Yuan is enrolled as an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. student with coordinating discipline Mathematics concentrating in Statistics, and co-discipline Computer Science. Her interest is in becoming a professional statistician.
Yuan's grandfather is a mathematics professor, and her father studied mathematics and chemistry. She is also an athlete, who was invited to be a professional volleyball player after high school, and as an undergraduate won several medals in swimming for her college. During her holidays, she has taught mathematics for elementary school students in a poor village in western China.
