Teaching -- List of recent UMKC courses:

Dr. Sega (pronounced "Shega") does research in commutative algebra and focuses on homological properties of finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian (local) rings. She recently helped discover an important counterexample to a conjecture of Auslander about certain properties of Gorenstein rings. Before joining our faculty in Fall 2005, since 2003 she has been a Visiting Research Instructor at Michigan State University, was previously a postdoctoral fellow during 2002-2003 at MSRI (Mathematical Sciences Research Institute) in Berkeley, CA, and in Summer 2002 was a Liftoff Mathematician for the Clay Mathematics Institute.

Dr. Sega comes from a family of mathematicians which includes both her parents and her sister. About teaching she says: "One of my main strengths as a teacher is the ability to focus on my students as individuals, be receptive to their difficulties, and find ways to overcome them...I think teaching should be a partnership between the teacher and the students, requiring commitment from both...Teaching is the most fulfilling part of my life as a mathematician." Dr. Sega is now the sponsor of the MAA (Mathematical Association of America) Student Chapter at UMKC started in Winter 2004. She is also very interested in training mathematics teachers: "I already had a good experience teaching a class for elementary teachers (geometry) and I would like to be involved more with future teachers."
