John was until 2006 the High School/College Partnership Mathematics and Statistics Coordinator at UMKC. From 1973-2004, he worked in the Raytown School District variously as a teacher of mathematics through AP Calculus, Curriculum Coordinator for K-12 mathematics programs (1985-1992), Coordinator of Staff Development (1992-2003), and recently Instructional Coach for K-12 mathematics (2003-2004). He has previously also taught at Avila College, as an adjunct instructor for UMKC's School of Education, and for Emporia University's Distance Learning Center through the Kansas City Kansas Community College campus.

At various times he has acted as president or in other capacities for both the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Kansas City Area Teachers of Mathematics, and was a member of State Evaluation Teams for teacher certification programs at Park University (1990) and the University of Missouri - Columbia (1992).

John has also been active in scouting organizations for boys and girls, for instance leading groups through a 12 day wilderness trek in New Mexico during both 1996 and 1999.
