Beyond the Catalog: Notes or Advice
Description: Reading comprehension and writing skills in the language of Mathematics; grammar, syntax and logic, understanding, expressing, proving, recognizing and employing common patterns of mathematical thought; emphasizing not what is said, but how it is said. Particularly useful to:
- Students returning to school after a long hiatus (even years!)
- The math-anxious
- Students with weak skills
- Those interested in elementary or middle school teaching.
Advice: Although very elementary algebra (about the level of Algebra I in high school) is used for examples in this course, Math 105 is about how to
read mathematics. It is meant to explicitly discuss all the issues of language and notation that are often left unspoken and expected to be automatically "absorbed" in content-oriented mathematics courses such as
Math 110 (College Algebra), or any higher level mathematics course. Almost anyone can benefit from this course.
Notes:
- Math 105 is not a course in Introductory Algebra or Intermediate Algebra.
- Algebra courses below the level of Math 110 (College Algebra) are usually taken outside UMKC. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics does currently offer Math 100 (Introductory Algebra), which is taken Credit/No-Credit and does not count for any graduation requirement, and starting Fall 2005 will also be offered through Arts & Sciences Continuing Education.
- Provided a course is not offered at UMKC and your advisor approves, the KCASE program at UMKC allows you to take such a course at certain local community colleges or local universities in Missouri at NO COST if you are properly enrolled at UMKC. See the KCASE site for complete information on this option.
