My research is in subspecialty of condensed matter physics called surface science. We attempt to understand the physics and chemistry that go on at surfaces. Specifically, we employ a technique called scanning tunneling microscopy. These image individual atoms and molecules on surfaces. With this technique, we evaluate methods of creating nanometer-scale structures on surfaces, structures with dimensions on the order of electron wavelengths. In addition, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study chemical reactions on surfaces.
