Pre-Dental Hygiene

UMKC offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene through the UMKC School of Dentistry.  Admission into this program is competitive and based on factors such as prerequisite course completion, GPA, academic credentials, letters of evaluation, a personal interview, and motivation for the profession.  For more information on the BS in Dental Hygiene program including admission requirements, contact the Division of Dental Hygiene at 816-235-2050, dh@umkc.edu or visit their website. 

There are two routes to obtain a BS in Dental Hygiene.  The entry-level program for college juniors and seniors is for students who have no previous dental hygiene certification.  The second route is a degree completion program for students who have previously completed a dental hygiene program but do not have a bachelor’s degree.

Students applying to the entry-level program for college juniors and seniors must complete certain prerequisite courses within their freshman and sophomore years and earn a minimum total of 60 hours of college credit before starting the program.  Students electing to complete their pre-dental hygiene course requirements at UMKC can be accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences as pre-dental hygiene students.  Though admission to the BS in Dental Hygiene program is competitive, admission as a pre-dental hygiene student is open to students who meet the general UMKC admission requirements.

Pre-dental hygiene students consult with a pre-health advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences each semester to ensure they are staying on track with the pre-dental hygiene curriculum.  The sample plan shown here is an example of how the prerequisite courses might be scheduled.  It contains all prerequisite courses within the first two years of study with the student applying to the BS in Dental Hygiene program near the end of the fall semester of the second year.  If accepted into the BS in Dental Hygiene program, students would complete the program requirements in the third and fourth year.

UMKC pre-dental hygiene students who are interested in the UMKC BS in Dental Hygiene program are urged to initiate and maintain contact with the Division of Dental Hygiene to stay informed of admission requirements and application dates.  In addition, pre-dental hygiene students should meet with their pre-health advisors each semester for class scheduling.
