In collaboration with KC Free Health Clinic, Truman Medical Center,  The VA Medical Center , University of Kansas Hospital and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, the Department of Psychology’s HIV/AIDS Research Group is launching a new National Institutes of Health funded study called Motiv8 Adherence Project, led by Dr. Kathy Goggin. The purpose of the study is to test the efficacy of interventions to improve participants’ success at adhering to the often difficult and complicated HIV medication regimens known as Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) that are necessary to successfully treat HIV disease. Participants will be randomized to one of three study groups: standard care, enhanced counseling, or enhanced counseling in combination with observed therapy. Enhanced counseling is a Motivational Interviewing based multi-component psycho-educational intervention developed specifically for this project. Observed Therapy involves directly observing participants as they take a daily dose of their medication. This is a 5-year project that will enroll approximately 250 participants who will each be followed for 1 year.
