- A grade of “C-” or higher must be achieved for any Psychology course to apply towards the major in Psychology.
- When you have completed 90 credit hours, contact Arts & Sciences Advising (Scofield Hall Rm 9) to conduct a senior audit. They will give you the materials you need for the Psychology audit (completed at Psychology Advising, 4825 Troost, Rm 110).
*Note: If a student has completed Psych 316 at another institution, he/she may petition to take an exam demonstrating their mastery of Psych 316 course content. A score of 70% or above must be earned on the exam.
The exam may only be attempted once. See a Psychology Department Advisor for more information.
General Advice to help you develop your plan of study:
- Please note that the Psychology department varies course offerings each semester. All courses are not offered every year. If you are interested in a particular elective or a particular core area course, you should enroll if it is being offered and you have taken the prerequisite courses.
- Do not plan to complete your coursework by taking courses only during the summer. The department usually offers some courses during the summer term, but we can’t guarantee that required courses will be offered.
- Make sure you meet the prerequisites for courses prior to enrollment. Otherwise, you will be dropped from the class during the first week of the term and other courses in which you are eligible to enroll may no longer be open.
Psychology Minor
- A minor in Psychology requires 18 hours in Psychology with at least 12 of those hours at the upper-division level.
- PSYCH 210, 316, 302WI and 415 and two Psychology electives (300/400 level course) are required of all Psychology minors.
- Psych 316, 302WI and 415 must be completed at UMKC.
- Students may transfer in Psychology courses approved by the Psychology Department, but a minimum of 9 hours must be taken from the UMKC Psychology Department.
- A grade of “C-” or higher must be achieved for any course to apply toward the minor in Psychology.
Double Major: Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Music Therapy emphasis
- Conservatory of Music students in the Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Music Therapy emphasis program, who also want to major in Psychology, may apply up to 6 hours of courses taken in the Conservatory toward the Psychology major.
- Specifically, Conservatory 260 Clinical Foundations Of Music Therapy can be counted as one of the two required electives, and Conservatory 435 Psychological Foundations Of Music may fulfill Core Area C or D (308/418, OR 304/405/450).
- A grade of “C-” or higher must be achieved for any course to apply toward the major in Psychology.
**These requirements are effective Fall 2008 and pertain to all students declaring a Psychology major or minor from that date forward**
