Degree Options

Newly Admitted Students

Students who have just been admitted into the UMKC School of Social Work have little latitude concerning which classes they enroll in during their first semester.  There are three categories of students admitted into the program: Full-time, Part-Time, and Advanced Standing BSW.  The Advanced Standing BSW can be either full or part time.

Traditional Program
  • Requires 60 credits coursework (12 credit hours of field practicum)
  • The Traditional Program may be completed either full or part time
    • Full time student are able to complete within 2 years (15 credit hours each semester)
      • Some elective courses are available during the summer to lighten the full-time load Fall and Spring
    • Part-time students typically take 3-4 years (6 credit hours to 9 or 12 credit hours each semester)
  • Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 overall GPA

Full-Time Students

Full-time students who have been admitted into the program and are not transferring any MSW foundation courses will only have the option of enrolling the in following courses during their first year:

Fall

Part-Time Students

The first two semesters of the part-time students’ program are 6-9 credit hours each.

Fall
  • SOCWK 5530 Human Behavior: Individuals in the Social Environment
  • SOCWK 5534 Social Welfare Programs and Policies
  • plus an optional approved elective
Spring
  • SOCWK 5531 Human Behavior: Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities
  • SOCWK 5565 Systemic Oppression & Social Justice Advocacy

Advanced Standing BSW Students

Students who are accepted as advanced standing students must have a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.  Advanced Standing BSW students take 6 Credits Hours of Masters level coursework to bring them up to the same educational level as Traditional Standing students who have finished their first 30 hours of required courses.  These bridging courses (SOC-WK 5538 and 5539) are only offered during the Summer semester.  Applicants who wish to start earlier may take approved electives prior to completing their bridging courses

Advanced Standing Program
  • Requires a BA or BS in Social Work
    • from a program accredited by CSWE
  • Requires 36 credits of coursework (6 credit hours of field practicum)
  • May be completed in one year of full-time attendance (15 credit hours each semester, plus 6 credit hours of “bridging courses”)
  • Bridging courses are offered only during the Summer semester
  • Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 overall GPA
