Text Box: Welcome!
About the School of Social Work: The School of Social Work, started in 1999 as a result of collaborative efforts by the University of Missouri System, UMKC, and the consistent support and encouragement of many social service agencies as well as those practicing in the field at that time in the Kansas City metropolitan area. This program is a true example of community collaboration. In addition, the M.S.W. program is accredited by Council on Social Work Education.
The mission of the M.S.W. Program is the preparation of graduates to practice competently, ethically and with theoretical understanding of diversity, human behavior, and social contexts with individuals, families and groups in an urban community context.
Emphasized Themes: The M.S.W. Program has five underlying themes that guide preparation as a professional social worker.  These are the ecosystemic theory of the interaction of individuals and their environments, social and economic justice, asset building, strengths perspective, and community development.
Six Core Competencies: The program identifies six core competencies for student learning in the classroom and in the field: direct practice and theory, organizations and leadership, community-building and social action, research and evaluation and professional development. Achieving proficiency in each of these competency areas results in an M.S.W. graduate with the ability to practice across a variety of social service settings.
The program is inclusive and draws from a diverse applicant pool. Toward this end, program faculty make regular presentations in the community to diverse groups and work with the Office of Student Affairs to link with student organizations which represent women, people of color, gays and lesbians, international students, and students with disabilities.
