ARAN ISLANDS TRIP

In April 2005 Professor Tom Mardikes traveled with three graduate sound design students (pictured left to right Kristian Ball, Patrick Meagher, Genevieve Nicholas, Tom Mardikes) to the island of Inishmaan, The Aran Islands, in western Ireland. The project began with extensive planning in two main categories; assembling equipment and international travel plans.

The "mission" was to visit and record natural sounds of Inishmaan for an upcoming production of Martin McDonagh's "The Cripple of Inishmaan." We planned to provide research and images for the production, record high quality sounds, and learn what we could about the island. (Windows Media Player or QuickTime video. Supervising Editor, AME, James Gaar.)

The assembled system included:

Neumann RSM-191 short shot-gun microphone
DPA Audio Windpak wind screen
Grace Lunatec microphone preamplifiers
Digidesign Digi-002 Rack with ProTools 6
LE Apple Macintosh G4 laptop computer
Outboard hard drive Sony MDR-V700 headphones
(2) Powerline PS2000 power stations

Recordings were 24 bit, 96kHz M/S stereo recordings
