ABBEY ROAD TRIP

In April 2006 Professor Tom Mardikes traveled to London with eight graduate sound design students to spend a day recording an original song in Abbey Road's famed recording Studio 2.  Pictured left to right are Chris Bolster, Abbey Road session engineer, Matt Janszen, Rusty Wandall, Jithendria Kumar Aravamudhan, Jason Scheufler, Kristian Ball, Patrick Meagher, Yun Sin Tseng, Aimee Meagher, and Genevieve Nicolas.

We recorded "The Wedding Song,"
(Supervising Editor, AME, James Gaar) a pop song (click here for Windows Media Player or QuickTime video or here for audio only) written by Patrick Meagher (pictured left) for the December 2004 UMKC Theatre production of "The Circus Show." For five weeks the students rehearsed as a group, with Patrick playing guitars and singing lead vocals, Jason playing bass and singing harmonies, Kristian playing drums, Matt Janszen at the piano in Studio 2 (pictured below), and all singing the chorus. A week before leaving for London, we produced a full recording in our own studios, taking 20+ hours for tracking, overdubs and mixing.

At Abbey Road, we spent a 10-hour day with engineer Chris Bolster only able to accomplish tracking and the majority of overdubs. We were surprised that Studio 2 was so huge and live. Bolster's mic technique for the live room was of particular interest to the students, as well as an absolutely marvelous microphone collection.
