Rebecca Lee
, Associate Professor of Spanish, (B.A. Wellesley College, Ph.D. Cornell University).  19th and 20th century Latin American literature and film, gender studies and cultural studies.  Professor Lee has published articles on the intersection of gender and the state in Peru, Argentina, Chile and most recently China.

My research is primarily focused on race, gender and nation in modern Latin America.  My book project examines the virilization of national identity and the degree to which women have served a metaphoric function within nationalist projects.  I focus on the ways in which the struggle to define cultural identities and to affirm political sovereignty is repeatedly played out through the bodies of women in a variety of texts that range from historiography to international bestseller.
