About the Writing Center

Students can work with tutors one-on-one.

Peer Tutoring:

The Writing Center at UMKC offers a peer tutoring service that is free of charge for students. Peer tutors can help students with a wide array of writing; everything from English to economics, from music to science, from engineering to business; the Writing Center's services are available to all students at all levels, from undergraduate to graduate students. Tutors at the Writing Center help students improve both their papers and their ability as writers by focusing on the organization and content of ideas within the paper over the less immediate details of grammar, mechanics, and spelling.

Writing tutors primarily work together with writers face-to-face. In order to meet with a Writing Center tutor you can walk in or, better yet, make an appointment by calling (816) 235-1146. Tutoring sessions last twenty to fifty minutes.  Tutors will work with you at any point in the writing process, so bring whatever you have, whether it is an assignment sheet or your fifth draft.

Students have access to the computer lab and the lounge area to study or socialize.

Study Spaces:

In addition to face-to-face peer tutoring, the Writing Center also offers a comfortable study space, including places to pull up with a notebook and textbook, and a small computer lab where students can work.

The computer lab features seven workstations and a laser printer. The computer lab is available for students to use for working on papers, checking email, etc. Also, the Writing Center is a Wi-Fi access point for UMKC students. Finally, we provide complimentary coffee and water to assist in your academic endeavors.
