WEPT
Information
The Written English Proficiency Test (WEPT) is a
written exam that all UMKC undergraduates must pass
before enrolling in a writing intensive class (any
class with a "WI" next to the number) or graduating.
Students have three hours to write an argumentative
essay based on a packet of articles surrounding a
certain topic. The WEPT is offered twice a semester,
and all students who have taken English 225 and have
taken at least 45 credit hours are eligible to take
it. For complete information regarding the WEPT and
Frequently Asked Questions, please visit the
WEPT page on the
Department of English website. The Writing Center is
committed to helping UMKC students succeed in all
aspects of writing, and the WEPT is no different. We
provide a variety of services to help students
prepare for the WEPT, including tutoring and
workshops.
As of
Spring 2009 the procedure to register for the WEPT
has changed. After registering for the WEPT through
Blackboard, students will be able to pick up the
packet of articles at Roo Prints one week before the
exam (note: packets will not be available the day of
the exam). As
always, students are not required to take the WEPT
if they have registered online. For a complete list of
instructions, check
WEPT FAQ.
WEPT-Related Services:
Personal Tutoring
All of
the tutors at the Writing Center are trained to help
students prepare for the WEPT. You can schedule an
appointment with a tutor get more information about
the exam, check a thesis statement, go over an
argument, etc. Tutors are happy to help writers at
all stages of the writing process, so we can help no
matter if you want help brainstorming or if you want
someone to look over a complete draft.
WEPT Walk-In Days
The
Tuesday and Wednesday before the WEPT are
reserved as walk-in days. If you need help using MLA
or if you aren't sure about your thesis statement,
this is the perfect time to drop by the Writing
Center and meet with a tutor. On walk-in days we
don't take appointments, so tutors meet with
students on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Workshops
Often,
students take the WEPT without realizing all of what
is required of them. To help students understand
what scorers are looking for in a WEPT essay, the
Writing Center provides several workshops during
which tutors explain what is required of students.
For a
list of workshops for the upcoming WEPT exam(s),
please visit our
Workshops page.
Handouts
The
following are handouts tutors use during WEPT
workshops, so they provide some of the basic
information about the exam:
