Centers and Institutes

The centers and institutes housed within the College of Arts and Sciences provide a multidisciplinary approach to research, education, training and public service.

These centers and institutes enable faculty members and students to work with one another, other institutions and representatives of the civic, corporate and philanthropic communities on issues, projects and programs related to UMKC’s academic strengths and interests.

Applied Language Institute

The Applied Language Institute (ALI) offers comprehensive English as second language (ESL) instruction for academic, personal and professional purposes. ALI courses aim to provide students with an understanding of U.S. culture and values while acknowledging students’ own cultures and languages.

Center for Economic Information

The Center for Economic Information uses technology in support of economic decision-makers in both the public and private sectors.

Harry S. Truman Center for Governmental Affairs

The Harry S. Truman Center for Governmental Affairs aims to be a link and resource for all its initiatives as well as a place where people can connect to explore the broad field of its charge: governmental affairs.

Center for Midwestern Studies

The mission of the Center for Midwestern Studies is to encourage and disseminate innovative research, teaching and public programming about the American Midwest.

Center for Neighborhoods

The Center for Neighborhoods was established by the UMKC Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design in partnership with the State of Missouri and community partners to address the challenges facing neighborhoods in Kansas City, Missouri.
