There are more than 155 department scholarships available to help UMKC College of Arts and Sciences students pay for college thanks to gifts from UMKC alumni, the Kansas City community and other generous donors.

Architecture, Urban Planning + Design

The Bob Berkebile/BNIM Fund
  • Academic year amount - varies
  • Celebrates excellence in design in architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning + design. Preference will be given to students studying urban planning + design who are in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Financial need can and should be considered but will not be the final deciding factor.
CFM Architecture, Urban Planning + Design Scholarship
  • Academic year amount - varies
  • Full-time undergraduate student studying architecture, urban planning + design who graduated high school in the Kansas City area and demonstrates financial need. Students must also email us indicating they have graduated from a high school in the KC area or submit a one-page essay explaining their financial need.
The Tom Nelson/BNIM Fund
  • Celebrates excellence in design in architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning + design. Preference will be given to students studying architecture in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Financial need will be considered but will not be the deciding factor.
J.C. Nichols Student Prize for Urban Planning + Design
  • An annual prize to students in their third year of urban planning + design studio.
Edwin S. “Bud” Persons Award
  • Recognizes outstanding and meritorious achievement in the field of architecture. The award may be based on both academic excellence and aptitude for design.
The Seligson Fund
  • To be used to provide funding for special events every other year, or as funds are available, to address issues of the built environment including architecture and architectural history, as well as other aspects for the design disciplines through the AUPD.
Joy D. Swallow Scholarship Fund

  • Celebrates excellence in design within the following disciplines: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and urban planning + design. Preference is given to first-generation college students who demonstrate financial need.

Walt Bodine Scholarship in Communication Studies
  • Academic year amount - up to $1,000
  • Undergraduate students majoring in communication studies with an emphasis in TV, radio, film, new media forms or community journalism.
Alex and Josephine B. Coleman Scholarship Fund
  • Academic year amount - three scholarships, up to $2,250 each
  • Students majoring in communication studies with a cumulative UMKC GPA of 3.3 or above who have completed at least 60 credit hours.

The Fred Andrews Jubilee Creative Cinema Fund
  • Academic year amount - up to $1,200
  • Awards and internships for undergraduate or graduate students majoring in communication studies with an emphasis in film and media arts.
Faye Kircher Public Speaking Award Scholarship
  • Academic year amount - varies
  • Awarded based on performance at the Faye Kircher Public Speaking Competition; recipients selected by judges. Participants from the current semester’s COMM-ST 110 courses are selected to participate in the contest. Contact the Communication Studies Department for more details.
Carol Koehler Memorial Scholarship
  • Academic year amount - up to $1,000
  • Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in communication studies who has completed at least 12 credit hours of communication studies and has a cumulative UMKC GPA of 3.0 or above. Students are required to enroll in the department’s three-hour internship course during the ensuing academic year.
Michelle LaPointe Scholarship
  • Academic year amount - up to $750
  • Nontraditional students majoring in communication studies who have completed at least 24 credit hours and demonstrate financial need.
Dianne and Charles Maggio Scholarship in Communication Studies
  • Academic year amount - $1,000 for Summer and $1,000 for Fall
  • Communication studies major who is in good academic standing and demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to students who express a desire to enter a career in journalism or mass communications.
G. Tom Poe Scholarship Fund for Outstanding Achievement in Film and Media Arts
  • Academic year amount - up to $750
  • Undergraduate students majoring in communication studies with an emphasis in film and media arts or minoring in film studies. Preference is given to a senior-level student who maintains a 3.0 GPA.
The Philip Alexander Riggs Scholarship in Communication Studies

  • Students in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in communication studies with a preference given to students who express interest in film studies.
John Scott Shepherd Scholarship
  • Academic year amount - up to $1,000
  • Undergraduate students majoring in communication studies with an emphasis in film and media arts.
Suzanne Crispin Williams Scholarship
  • Academic year amount - up to $1,000
  • Undergraduate student majoring in communication studies or women’s studies. Preference is given to a returning female student pursuing her first undergraduate degree.

Michelle Boisseau Scholarship in Poetry
  • For outstanding undergraduate students majoring in the Department of English within the College of Arts and Sciences who have a 3.0 GPA.

The John Mark Eberhart Memorial Scholarship

  • Graduate students who are receiving an MFA in creative writing and media arts with a preference given to students with an emphasis in nonfiction or poetry.
Crystal Field Scholarship in Poetry
  • Academic year amount - $2,000
  • Full-time, upper-level undergraduate student or graduate student majoring in creative writing.
Barbara Storck Award for Poetry
  • Academic year amount - varies
  • Talent-based writing award open to any UMKC undergraduate or graduate student. Awarded for best poem and short essay written during the year.
  • This award is open to full- and part-time students. Prizes are offered for both fiction (3,000 words or less) and poetry (no more than three poems).
  • Previous first place winners in any category are ineligible in that category.

Criminal Justice and Criminology

Alvin Brooks Scholarship

  • Full-time undergraduate student majoring in criminal justice and criminology who is in good academic standing with a minimum 2.0 GPA. Preference given to students who are first-generation college students and who graduated from an accredited Kansas City, Missouri, high school or transferred from a Kansas City area community college. Hodges Scholarship Fund in Economics

The Bobby Watson Jazz Journalism Scholarship in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Academic year amount - varies
  • Fund shall provide a scholarship award for one student per semester who is covering the jazz beat at the University News, the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s student newspaper.
  • Preference will be given to students majoring in the Department of Communication Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences at UMKC and those who indicate an interest in jazz. However, the award is open to any student majoring within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Study Abroad

Mirkin and Finegan Study Abroad Scholarship

  • Deserving undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences participating in UMKC’s Study Abroad program for a minimum of one month abroad.
  • Preference is given to students who will be sophomore, junior or senior level students and who maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
  • A one-page essay describing how the student will academically prepare for study in the country of destination and what specific or related courses and research the student will complete before studying abroad is required.
