A Vibrant Arts Community

  • We serve a variety of students from non-majors to the professionally oriented with minors and bachelor's and master's degrees in art history and studio art.
  • Small class sizes with interactive learning experiences.
  • Our faculty includes accomplished and nationally exhibiting artists, as well as dedicated and actively publishing art historians — one with a joint appointment at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
  • Adjunct faculty consists of local artists, art educators and professionals. Curators from The Nelson-Atkins regularly offer advanced art history courses.
  • The department’s own UMKC Gallery of Art, visiting artists and scholars and gallery exhibitions supplement coursework and provide unique interactive learning opportunities outside of the classroom. We engage students in high-impact learning trips such as local artists’ studios and active art hubs across the country.
  • Physical proximity and professional connections to museums, studios and organizations in Kansas City offer students additional opportunities for internships, access to visiting artists and enrichment programs to enhance their education.
