Master of Arts in Art History Admissions Requirements

In addition to following the application process outlined in UMKC’s graduate admission requirements, applicants should submit supplementary materials specific to the MA in Art History.

Application Deadlines

  • Apply by May 1  for Fall admission.
  • Apply by Nov. 1 for Spring admission.
  • Apply by Feb. 1 to be considered for graduate assistantships and fellowships during the following academic year.

Complete Application Requirements

  1. Complete the online application through the UMKC Admissions website.
  2. Send all undergraduate transcripts directly to UMKC Admissions.
  3. Send the following supplementary Art History materials to umkcarthistorygrad@umkc.edu to complete the application process:
    • A short (one-page) statement of purpose
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • A short writing sample (preferably a short art history paper, 10 pages or less)

Master of Arts in Studio Art Admissions Requirements

  3. Send the following supplementary Studio Art materials to Elijah Gowin via Dropbox or Google Drive:
    • Portfolio of recent work, 15-20 images (jpeg/bmp/QT/AVI/Flash)
    • A separate document that lists your portfolio images’ titles, dates, sizes and media type
    • CV/resume
    • Personal statement, addressing:
      • Reason(s) for pursuing admittance into graduate-level study,
      • Reason(s) for choosing UMKC’s Department of Art & Art History as educational institution,
      • Focus of art work,
      • Ultimate professional ambitions, and
      • Why you should be selected for the M.A. program.
    • Three letters of recommendation from art professionals or professors

iPhD in Art History Admissions Requirements

In addition to following the application process outlined in UMKC’s graduate admission requirements, applicants should submit supplementary materials specific to the iPhD in Art History.

Application Deadlines

  • Apply by Jan. 31  for Fall admission.

Eligibility Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in art history, anthropology or history
  • An undergraduate minimum GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • A Masters degree (an M.A. in Art History is ideal)
  • Prerequisite coursework: Survey of World Arts

Complete Application Requirements

  1. Complete the online application through the UMKC Admissions website.
  2. Send all undergraduate transcripts directly to UMKC Admissions.
  3. Send the following supplementary Art History materials to umkcarthistorygrad@umkc.edu to complete the application process:
    • A short (one-page) statement of purpose
