Architecture, Urban Planning + Design
Why did you choose your major?
I fell in love with the idea of being able to design or redesign places to make them more sustainable for the future. Urban planning takes into account everything we take advantage of daily such as the orientation of buildings, how the roads connect, the design of parking lots, the layout of bike/pedestrian paths and so much more — everything is connected.
What did you learn during your internship?
I interned at an architecture firm and an engineering/planning firm. During these experiences, I learned different software programs and further developed my understanding of real world situations, like transportation planning in different cities. It was great to see what they were doing and consider how we could bring that to Kansas City.
What will you take from your experience at UMKC into your professional career?
Public speaking is something that we have to continually do throughout the program and I wasn’t great at it because I didn’t do it much. But through repetition, presenting several projects to professors and receiving feedback, my entire peer group has grown and improved in that area. Our studio program is so tight-knit. We got to be close friends — kind of like family — and I don’t know many programs with that type of camaraderie.
