Current Student Scholarships

A variety of scholarships are available to UMKC College of Arts and Sciences students thanks to gifts from UMKC alumni, the Kansas City community and other generous donors. As a current CAS student, you may be eligible for scholarship awards.

Students must fill out the Continuing Scholarship Application by March 1 to be considered. Some scholarships also require the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Architecture, Urban Planning + Design

The Seligson Fund
Qualifications: To be used to provide funding for a special event(s) every other year, or as funds are available, to address issues of the built environment including architecture and architectural history, as well as other aspects for the design disciplines through the AUPD.

Joy D. Swallow Scholarship Fund

Qualifications: Full-time student majoring in art. Preference is given to juniors, seniors and graduate students majoring in studio art.
How to Apply: Applicants must submit a digital portfolio of 15 images showing recent artwork. Video or animation projects are also accepted. Students must submit a numbered image list referring to each digital image that includes the title, medium, size and year for each piece. Please be sure that each file name includes your first and last name.  Email the files to umkcasscholarships@umkc.edu. Carol Koehler Memorial Scholarship

Qualifications: A junior or senior majoring in communication studies who has completed at least 12 credit hours of communication studies and has a cumulative UMKC GPA of 3.0 or above. Students are required to enroll in the department’s three-hour internship course during the ensuing academic year.

Michelle LaPointe Scholarship

Qualifications: Non-traditional students majoring in communication studies who have completed at least 24 credit hours and demonstrate financial need.

The Department of Theatre has over 20 scholarships available to full-time students. All prospective UMKC students are automatically considered for scholarships, awards and fellowships during their MFA audition. All graduate and undergraduate level scholarships are chosen by the Theatre Department’s Scholarship Committee. Qualifications: Undergraduate or graduate students majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences. Recipients must have and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA or above, and be in good academic standing.

James Philip Wahlman Scholarship Award Fund

The Bobby Watson Jazz Journalism Scholarship in the College of Arts and Sciences

Qualifications: Fund shall provide a scholarship award for one student per semester who is covering the “jazz beat” at the University News, the University of Missouri- Kansas City’s student newspaper. Preference will be given to students majoring in the Department of Communication Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri- Kansas City, and those who indicate an interest in jazz. However, the award is open to any student majoring within the College of Arts and Sciences.

The LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and ally) Scholarship is designed to support students regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex, who are enrolled in any degree program at UMKC, who maintain at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA and who demonstrate support of the LGBTQIA community, either on-campus or off-campus, through significant support, engagement, and/or volunteering. Students must submit a one page essay detailing their past and current support and/or involvement in the LGBTQIA community.
