While the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit at UMKC, we like our class sizes small. In fact, we have a 14:1 student-faculty ratio. This leads to big opportunities for our students, like getting to know professors and graduating with hands-on experiences. With 17 academic departments and numerous interdisciplinary programs, the College offers a diverse educational experience. Our students obtain a true liberal arts education by taking courses that span the arts, humanities and sciences. The opportunities with a liberal arts education from UMKC are endless.
UMKC was initially founded as the University of Kansas City and is often referred to as “Kansas City’s University,” a title we proudly carry. We’re located in the heart of Kansas City, and to be honest we’re pretty smitten with this place. KC is a dynamic 21st-century city that offers something for everyone: pro sports, great concert venues, numerous restaurants, urban living and suburban development. The Kansas City metro is also a thriving regional hub for economic development and job growth. Many UMKC students continue living and working here after graduation.
Not to brag, but at UMKC, we can drop names faster than the cast of Hamilton. Well, maybe not, but our faculty, staff and alumni are pretty well connected around the metro. We’ve had students work alongside curators at world-renowned museums like the Nelson Atkins and the WWI Museum; cover stories for local news outlets and radio stations like Fox 4 and KCUR; intern for pro sports teams like the Royals and the Chiefs; and gain experience at top companies like H&R Block and Cerner. Getting involved and making connections outside of the classroom not only makes for a more dynamic college experience, but also helps our students develop professionally.
