Robert Stewart came to UMKC in 1976 and left in 1980; he returned in 1985, to specialize in poetry and nonfiction writing, magazine and books editing and publishing, as well as teaching, running multiple conferences and public events. In 2007, he was a finalist for the nation’s highest editorial award, the National Magazine Award; in 2008, he won the award in the essay category. He has written and received dozens of grants from state and national arts councils.
