As Interim Dean, Dr. John Herron oversees faculty, staff, students, and academic affairs in the 16 departments that make up the College of Arts and Sciences. He is a Professor in the Department of History as well as Associate Director of the UMKC Honors College. A specialist in nineteenth century American social and cultural history, Dr. Herron counts among his research interests environmental history, the American West, and regional studies. He teaches a wide range of courses, including the Gilded Age, historical methods, western film and art history, and an introduction to environmental studies. Dr. Herron also co-directs a summer study abroad program to Ireland.

A native of western Montana, Dr. Herron attended his home-state university before receiving his Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. Before his arrival in Kansas City, he taught at Tufts University in Boston and the University of San Diego. His published work includes Science and the Social Good (Oxford); Human/Nature (New Mexico); and Wide Open Town (Kansas). He is also at work on a pair of forthcoming local history projects.

When not managing his many demanding roles at UMKC, you might spot Dr. Herron discussing American league baseball at Crow’s Coffee Shop.
