Dr. Deborah B. Smith is a Professor of Sociology. For the 2019-2020 academic year she serves as the Interim Chair of the UMKC School of Social Work located within the College of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Smith has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Kansas City Star and provided expert commentary for National Public Radio and Public Television. Her scholarly articles appear in Journal of Marriage and the Family, Journal of Family Issues, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Human Services, Professional Development and Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare.

Dr. Smith has published scholarly articles on a range of work & family topics as well as program evaluation. Dr. Smith has served on 20 UMKC master’s thesis committees and two IPhD committees. She chaired 14 of these committees and two of these theses were subsequently published in academic journals.
