While an undergraduate degree in sociology is an ideal preparation for a Master of Arts in Sociology, many students enter the program with backgrounds in other fields and only some previous sociology coursework.
Students who have not taken undergraduate courses in social theory, research methods and/or statistics may be admissible, but will be asked to complete these courses to gain full admission into our M.A. program.
Our program requirements:
• An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (B) in the junior/senior years
• An overall GPA of 2.75 and a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses
• A grade of B- (80%) or higher in three undergraduate courses: Social Theory, Research Methods, and Statistics (equivalent to SOCIOL 263, SOCIOL 361, and SOCIOL 362). We strongly advise potential applicants to have completed at least two (preferably all three) of these courses prior to applying to the program.
Applicants must submit a completed UMKC application for admission and all official transcripts from each previous institution attended to the UMKC Office of Admissions.
In addition to the UMKC graduate application, please submit the following documents in an email to email@example.com.
– Statement of Purpose
– A writing sample
– 3 letters of recommendation (preferably from former professors or academic mentors)
