Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Science
Undergraduate research is a great experience. Not only do you begin to make sense of everything you've learned in classes, but you also can start to narrow down to an area of interest within your field. Participating in an undergraduate research program makes you more marketable to graduate schools and future employers. Most programs will pay your travel expenses plus a stipend, which is usually quite generous. It is a great way to earn money while gaining invaluable research experience, not to mention having a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, many students are unaware of the vast number of undergraduate research programs offered. In an attempt to spread the word about these programs, we have compiled web sites of some programs.
NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanogragphy at University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography
Research Experience for Undergraduates at CERN Summer Student Program sponsored by Northeastern University
In addition to these programs, there are opportunities for undergraduate research here at UMKC. Many of the professors are willing to help undergraduates do research. Visit the Faculty of the UMKC Physics Department to find out more about the professors here and the research they are involved in.
Independent Student Research
Below are various programs and grants that can help fund student projects:
SEARCH - Students Engaged in Artistic and Academic Research
SEARCH grants can give up to $1,250 per semester for up to two semesters for a student research project. The application process requires a three page proposal, a faculty mentor, and a few forms. As far as research grants go, this is one is fairly easy to apply for.
The grant can be used to purchase supplies and equipement needed for the research project. It can also be used for travel expenses associated with the project, and a stipend may even be payable to the student while working on the project. As part of the three page proposal, the student would need to justify the any expenses or stipends that would be paid through the grant.
This grant can be applied for at anytime
